about

(from the liner notes by Will Friedwald) For instance, there's the opener "Just One of Those Things" (which, even though it's a Cole Porter classic and everybody knows it, is not nearly heard overdone as "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To," a great song that I can never listen to again). He finds new things to do with the melody, all of which are swinging, none of which are abstract or obtuse merely for the sake of it. The melody isn't exactly as Porter wrote it, but it isn't pointlessly bent out of shape either. I like the riff that saxist Daryl Lowery uses to introduce the tune - it's so good he could even stand to bring it back later as a recurring motif - I like the way he Scott ritards and changes direction on "cool down," using a musical point to illustrate a lyric point. Porter would often switch between major and minor to enhance the textual narrative, and here Scott and co are essentially doing that with tempo. The way he surges up at the end of the first chorus to herald the entrance of Lowery's solo is also very effective, dramatic yet seamless at the same time.
