about

(from the liner notes by Will Friedwald)
"Have You Met Miss Jones" uses tempo for contrast, in that it's also done fast and swinging, here it's a jazzy waltz - in fact, there's a brief, Mozartian break at the start of Mark Shilansky piano solo which seems like a reference to the European tradition of 3/4 time. He gets more playful in his second chorus (following the piano and sax), extending the ends of phrases in a very free fashion - after all, he's a man that must be free. Very discreetly, on the second bridge, he slips into 4/4, which we don't notice because of the call and response chanting match he gets into with the quartet, and there's a very droll spoken tag as well.
